GST returns in Tally: a plain-English starting point

For someone new to accounts, "GST return filing" can sound like a wall. GSTR-1, GSTR-3B, input credit, reconciliation — a lot of terms arrive at once. But the underlying idea is simple, and Tally does most of the heavy lifting once your data is clean. Here is the mental model to start with. What a GST return actually is A GST return is just a summary you send to the government: here is what I sold, here is the tax I collected, here is the tax I paid on my own purchases, and here is the difference. Everything else is detail on top of that one idea. The two you will meet first GSTR-1 is your statement of sales — the invoices you raised in a period. GSTR-3B is a summary return where you declare your totals and pay the net tax. Most small businesses deal mainly with these two, so they are the right place to begin. Clean entry is ninety percent of the job Here is the secret nobody tells beginners: filing is easy when your data entry is correct. If every sales and purchase voucher in Tally has the right GST rate, the right party details, and the right tax ledger, the returns almost prepare themselves. Most "GST is hard" problems are really "my data was messy" problems. Let Tally do the summarising Once your vouchers are entered properly, Tally's GST reports group everything for you — rate-wise, party-wise, and in the shape the portal expects. Your job shifts from calculating to checking: does this summary match what I know I sold? That habit of reviewing before filing is what separates a confident practitioner from a nervous one. Build confidence with small, real examples You do not learn this from theory. You learn it by entering a handful of real invoices, running the reports, and seeing the numbers line up. That is exactly how we teach it — hands-on, on real-looking data, until it stops feeling like a wall and starts feeling like a routine. If you want to go from "GST scares me" to "I file this every month without stress", our Tally course at the Patna centre walks you through it voucher by voucher, with a teacher beside you.
